* Phuc Duyen TRAN (1923–1993) - Lot 78
* Phuc Duyen TRAN (1923–1993) "View of the Fishing Village," 1951 Panel in polychrome lacquer and gold. Signed and dated lower right. 57 x 45 cm (Minor chips in the corners). Provenance: private collection in the South of France. This rare lacquer panel, created by master lacquer artist Phuc Duyen TRAN, represents one of the high points of the artist’s career and demonstrates his perfect mastery of this unique material, deeply connected to his Vietnamese roots. Born in Hanoi, he enrolled at the Indochina School of Fine Arts in 1942 and graduated in 1946, specializing in lacquer. Building on this training, the artist quickly established himself as one of the most renowned lacquer masters of his generation, depicting idealized views of the countryside of his native Vietnam—which he would nevertheless leave for France in 1954, when he was in his thirties. He then continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Jean Souverbie (1891–1981), before eventually settling in Switzerland. His works from the 1950s—known as the “Vietnamese period,” to which this piece belongs—reflect a particularly prolific phase in the artist’s career. They are characterized by lacquer compositions that masterfully play on the contrasts of red or brown backgrounds, brought to life by lush landscapes that showcase the full range of possibilities offered by this medium. Our panel thus depicts a peaceful scene of Vietnamese rural life, punctuated by the reflections on the water, the slender silhouettes of palm trees, and lush vegetation rendered in golden tones of great finesse. Taking the form of folding screens, decorative panels, furniture, or wall compositions, his art has continually explored the aesthetic potential of lacquer, which he helped elevate to the status of a true modern art form.
