ADHEMAR, Jean - DAVID, [Louis] Birth of a painter's genius. Preface by Jean Cassou. Raoul Solar, Paris, 1953. In-folio in leaves under cover titled in gilt for the text: 83 pp. [7 pp. of which 5 are blank], accompanied by 289 reproductions of David's drawings, captioned and mounted on strong papier couleur lie de vie with gilt framing. The whole is housed in an ecru cloth-lined slipcase, titled on the front cover in gilt lettering on imitation red morocco. The spine is adorned with a bronze medal representing David, specially struck in the Ateliers de la Monnaie, Paris, after the David d'Angers medallion. (To be reattached to the slipcase). Edition of 289 numbered copies (no. 156) on Johannot pur fil à la forme paper. Each work in this edition is enhanced by an original drawing by Louis David from an auction held in Paris on 17/04/1826. Ours (no. 125), representing a full-length portrait of Athena the warrior, is accompanied by its certificate of appraisal issued by André Schoeller on June 28, 1949.
