Apollo XI, piece of Beta Cloth, A-11 spacesuits, size 5.5 x - Lot 72
Apollo XI, piece of Beta Cloth, A-11 spacesuits, size 5.5 x 5.5 cm, the latter sealed in its presentation box (7 x 7 cm) and accompanied by its certificate of authenticity.
- Beta cloth is a type of flame-retardant silica-fiber fabric with a tight weave of beta cloth, making it more durable against exposure to atomic oxygen. Similar to fiberglass, it is used in the manufacture of spacesuits (A7L). It was developed at the request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) after the fatal accident that claimed the lives of the Apollo 1 crew in 1967 - the nylon suits worn by the astronauts failed to withstand the fire that broke out in the Apollo capsule.
