- In 1985, the Brazilian joined the Lotus team, managed by French engineer Gérard Ducarouge, aboard his Lotus 97 T single-seater. The Brazilian confirmed his exceptional ability to drive in the wet, which he had demonstrated the previous year on the streets of Monaco, by winning the first Grand Prix of his career in Estoril, Portugal, on April 21, 1985, in a deluge, aboard his 98 T single-seater entered for the 1986 season.
